Gill Schmid Design is a multi-disciplinary design practice based in New York, specializing in Yacht Design, Architecture, Interiors and Art.

We are a young and very dynamic design team, trying to push the boundaries of what is new, what can be built or how it can be represented (in the real and virtual world), whether it be a piece of furniture or the design of a superyacht.

GSD’s directors met at the Architectural Association in London as students, before working their way through various master’s degrees and architecture offices in the UK and US. Alistair initially went a more theoretical route, whereas Veronika always had a passion for building and making things. Soon after Veronika graduated from a master’s program at UCLA in digital architecture and Alistair from a master program in architectural theory, they joined forces and started teaching architectural design studios at the Architectural Association together. In parallel they worked their way through various architecture offices in London and after some years they joined Martin Francis and Cecil Balmond at AGU - the Advanced Geometry Unit - at ARUP in London. This ignited not only their passion for yacht design, but also established a more all-encompassing approach to what they wanted to design and what design was to them. During this time Veronika also started working with Frank Stella and was getting more and more involved in the art world.

An invitation to teach graduate architecture at Columbia and Harvard University moved them to New York. Teaching and working for a few more years before establishing Gill Schmid Design in New York.

Over the past 10 years they have remained true to their experimental approach to design, always striving for new-ness, whilst retaining an avid knowledge of traditional ideas and methods of production.

Directors

Alistair Gill

Born and raised in the UK. He is a trained architect and has worked in world renowned yacht design and architecture offices for 15+ years before relocating and establishing Gill Schmid Design LLC in New York. He has served as a professor at some of the most prestigious architecture schools, including the Architectural Association in London and Columbia University (NYC).

Veronika Schmid

Born and raised in Austria, Germany, and the US. She is a trained architect and has worked in world renowned yacht design and architecture offices for 15+ years before relocating and establishing Gill Schmid Design LLC in New York. She has served as a professor at some of the most prestigious architecture schools, such as the Architectural Association in London, Harvard University and RISD. She has been collaborating with world renowned artists on the design, manufacturing, and project management for sculptural work since 2001.
